Celebration of Uttarayan (Makar Sankranti)Uttarayan, also known as Makar Sankranti in many parts of India, is a vibrant and joyous festival that marks the transition of the sun into the zodiac sign of Makara (Capricorn). It usually falls on January 14th each year and signifies the end of winter and the beginning of longer, warmer days. The festival holds immense cultural, spiritual, and agricultural significance, especially in the western Indian state of Gujarat, where it is celebrated with great enthusiasm.

Regional Variations

While known as Uttarayan in Gujarat, the festival is celebrated by different names across India:

  • Makar Sankranti in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Bihar

  • Pongal in Tamil Nadu

  • Magh Bihu in Assam

  • Lohri in Punjab
Each version of the festival has unique customs and cultural expressions, but all share the theme of thanksgiving and new beginnings.
